Peace for Troubled Hearts

at home edition

First Mennonite Church
Sugarcreek, Ohio May 10, 2020

We believe in Jesus and take his life, teachings, death and
resurrection as the model for how we live and the message we
We seek to be a caring and discerning community,
the gathered body of Christ,
that welcomes all to join in worship, study, and service.
We embody God’s transforming and redeeming Spirit in the world through our prophetic witness and action.

Peace for Troubled Hearts

Welcome and Announcements:
Focus Statement:

“In times of trouble, we seek your refuge, O God of peace. In times of uncertainty, we seek your way forward.”

Time of Meditation:
*Call to Worship:
L: Let us hear what God the Lord will speak, for God will speak peace to his people.
P: God will speak peace to the faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
L: Surely, God’s salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.
P: Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
L: The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
P: Righteousness will go before the Lord, and prepare the path for him. Let us prepare the way for the Lord.
*Opening Prayer:
Sovereign God, we confess that you are Creator of the world; we confess that Jesus Christ is our only hope in life and death; we confess that your Spirit bears witness with ours that we are your children. We gather to thank you for the tasks we have to do and the resources we give to one another. Draw us together. Give us grace to speak the truth freely with each other. Open our lips so our mouths might show forth your praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

*Gathering Hymn:
“Here, O Lord, Your Servants gather” Hymnal a Worship Book #7

Old Testament Reading: Psalm 31:1-5, 15-24
1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord. My faithful God.
15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. 17 Let me not be put to shame, Lord, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead. 18 Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous. 19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of you presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues. 21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. 22 In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.
Congregational Prayers:
Closing Prayer:
Lord God, we give you thank for all your gifts to us, our daily food, for health, for each breath we take, for freedom to choose, and for the gifts of your word, you power and your love. Help us, O God, as followers of Jesus, to multiply all that you have given us, to risk spreading your word and perhaps see it misunderstood. To gamble by loving those whom others think worthy only of hate, to take chances by doing good to those who have not done good to us. Help us be faith filled and desire to increase your glory and your goodness in this world. Make us people who share in both word and deed that which you have given to us. Amen.

Hymn of Praise:
“For the Beauty of the Earth” Hymnal a Worship Book #89

Prayer for Mother’s Day:
Holy One, we gather in your presence to give thanks and to celebrate the gift of love; a love that supports, nurtures and challenges us in ways that strengthen and transform us. We offer praise and thanksgiving for your unfailing presence in our lives and all of the blessings that you so generously offer us. Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day, we give thanks for mothers the world over. We give thanks for all those who have nurtured and cared for us, remembering especially, birth mothers, adoptive mothers, surrogate mothers, aunts, grandmothers, teachers, neighbors and all Women who have shared their faith with us. Amen.

~Hearing God’s Word~

Scripture: John 14: 1-14
Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
Message: “Peace for Troubled Hearts”—by Mike Gehman

*Hymn of Response:
“Nothing is Lost on the Breath of God” Sing the Story #121

Offering Invitation & Prayer:
Lord, you have formed us to be a people—the body of Christ, at work in your world. We celebrate the gifts you have given us to carry out the work of your kingdom. You have given your people many gifts. You have called some to teach, some to administer, some to offer hospitality, some to share the Good News, some to heal. We offer ourselves—our gifts, our time, our energy, our resources—to you. Amen.

*Sending Hymn:
“Go, My Friends, In Grace” Sing the Story #57

*Sending Words:
God sends us into the world, to accept the cost and to discover the joy of discipleship. Therefore go—carrying with you the peace of Christ, the love of God, and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, in trial and rejoicing. Amen.
