Me & You
and Working it
First Mennonite Church
Sugarcreek, Ohio March 4, 2018
Fellowship Time: 10:30-11:00
Sunday School: 11:00-12:00
We believe in Jesus and take his life, teachings, death and resurrection
as the model for how we live and the message we proclaim.
We seek to be a caring and discerning community,
the gathered body of Christ,
that welcomes all to join in worship, study, and service.
We embody God’s transforming and redeeming Spirit in the world
through our prophetic witness and action.
THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER__________________________
Me & You
and Working it Through
Ringing of the Bell:
Prelude: “Praise the Lord” -arr. Parks
Welcome & Announcements:
The commandments of Exodus 20 show God’s people what a relationship between them and God should look like, as well as how to treat one another. This may be one way that we might seek God’s will rather than rigidly apply rules.
Time of Meditation: “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” -arr. Mason
“What is this Place” Hymnal a Worship Book #1
*Call to Worship:
L: Come rule makers, rule breakers, and you who are still finding your way. Come. Whether you speak with wise words or with wisecracks, you are in the image of God. Come into God’s house. Hear God’s word. Prepare to meet your Maker and your match. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is greater than human strength.
P: Some of us like certainty and structure. Some of us don’t. We come by different roads, yet we are here together. We want to know God, and to be known by God. We are here to worship the Lord.
L: Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there.” We are here and Christ Jesus is here. We join our hearts in worship.
Psalm Reading: Hymnal a Worship Book #813 read responsively
Hymn of Praise:
“I Sing the Mighty Power of God” Hymnal a Worship Book #46
Prayers of the Congregation:
Children’s Time: Me & You & Working it Through—Janet Maust
Offertory: “We Have Come to Worship the Lord” -arr. Yannerella
“Teach Me Thy Truth” Hymnal a Worship Book #548
~Hearing God’s Word~
Scripture: Exodus 20:1-17
Message: “Commandments That Can Be Trusted” – by Mike Gehman
All: God, we call you ruler of all, but sometimes we make excuses. We try to avoid applying your rules to our actions and interests. At other times, we hold so tightly to rules that we break relationships. It is easier to imagine that your are like us than it is for us to be like you. We judge ourselves by success; you judge us by how we treat others. Help us to face our truth. Forgive us when we fail. Give us the courage to keep trying to live as you love.
*Words of Assurance:
Hymn of Response:
“When We Walk With the Lord” Hymnal a Worship Book #544
*Benediction: as we face each other
L: We are people of God.
P: We are people of God.
L: We go in God’s love to extend God’s love and live in God’s promise.
P: We go in God’s love to extend God’s love and live in God’s promise.
“Just a Closer Walk with Thee” Sing the Journey #106 (refrain only)
*Postlude: “God of Grace and God of Glory” -arr. Hughes
*Stand if you are able:
Coffee and Fellowship: A very warm welcome to all who worshipped with us today. After worship you are invited to a time of fellowship in the Gathering Place just outside the sanctuary. This followed by Sunday school for all ages. Ask an usher for the location of classes.
